Stills from video sketches and studio experiments while on residency at Cove Park.
In April 2016 I underwent emergency surgery, leaving my body broken and my mind craving stimulation. I fantasized about swimming; using my body, being both weightless and strong, my lungs filled with air as I push off underneath the water. I let the film reel of my minds eye go on repeat: the submersion into the water, my legs flecking and extending from the pool side into the blue, touching the void between the air and the surface.
This image of action has remained with me as I have regained my strength, and the work I developed at Hospitalfield, 'my body is my most immediate tool', now takes on new meaning - if my body is my most immediate tool, what does it mean to have my body back?
